Sloth: The avoidance of physical or spiritual work

In the 4th century Evagrius Ponticus a catholic monk revealed eight thoughts or behaviors, which kept us from truly knowing god. Ponticus list was one of guidance, not a measurement of who will burn in hell. His list:

  • Gula (gluttony)
  • Fornicatio (fornication, lust)
  • Avaritia (avarice/greed)
  • Tristitia (sorrow/despair)
  • Ira (wrath)
  • Acedia (acedia)
  • Vanagloria (vainglory)
  • Superbia (Pride)

It would be over a hundred years before Ponticus list would become such a measurement, and ultimately a tool of social control. In 590 AD Pope Gregory I revised the list of eight, and created what is now known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

  • Pride
  • Envy
  • Gluttony
  • Lust
  • Wraith
  • Greed
  • Sloth

The Popes intent was not to bring his people closer to God; it was a tool the Catholic Church and Roman Empire used to control the peasant population through fear and rhetoricrom. This list was not directly mentioned in the Bible as being sinful; it is a man-made list, although some of the concepts are derived in some part from a sin. This list was created and marketed by the Catholic Church to control the people. The Bible itself is an example of exactly how much power the Catholic Church yielded at that time. The masses were highly illiterate, and for those who could read; the church controlled the translation of the Bibles, and it was taught only the Pope was capable of speaking to God. I also want you to keep in mind the Catholic Church controlled what books were allowed in the Bible and which ones were not.

In the beginning I gave the definition of sloth, to sum it up it basically means being lazy. The church and the Romans were not fond of laziness. They needed the people to properly run the machine. If you had a blacksmith, who was lazy and took his sweet ass time on building weapons then the empire would not have their tools of persuasion to aid them on their “missionary” journeys.

In making slothfulness a sin, the empire had a tool of fear to motivate its people, and no one is better at using fear to make people believe in god than the fucking Catholic Church.

The people were brainwashed into believing that unless they put forth 110% on a daily basis to do the work of the church, and the Roman Empire then they were going to hell. The most fucked up part is not only do they have to work their asses off, but they also had to put forth 110% effort in their spiritual work, which included going to church which further contributed to their fucking brainwashing!

It makes me happy that we as people have some what evolved, in that we do not hold these sins as a compass on how to live our lives. The world is filled with slothfulness, and there is not a thing wrong with that. Today the only people who get pissed off when you are lazy is your government, corporations, and your wife. Let me tell you compared to that hell ain’t looking so bad.
